After this little Legend of Vox Machina moment made me way too emotional, here’s what Matt Mercer told me about the show’s funniest running gag

Spoilers ahead for the first nine episodes of The legend of Vox Machina Season 3.

The third season of The legend of Vox Machina is nearing its end in the TV program 2024 for Critical Role fans with a Amazon Prime Video subscriptionand the stakes could hardly be higher in the run-up to the final. Not only was Vox Machina betrayed by Raishan to really sour the victory of defeating Thordak, but that victory had already been bittersweet after Percy’s death. Add in more deaths thanks to the battle against the Cinder King, and the most recent episodes have been tearjerkers.

It was a small moment from episode 8 that, to my own surprise, hit me the hardest. Thinking back on how sad it was as the days counted down to the finale, I decided to watch something much funnier: what Matt Mercer told me during the finale. Legend of Vox Machina junket about my favorite of the show’s running gags.

Alas, let’s start with the little moment that was very well done, but hit me the hardest.

Vex Mourning Percy… With a certain arrowhead

Between the foreshadowing, the tone, and the one-sided declaration of love, Percy’s death at the end of episode 7 didn’t come as much of a surprise, and I expected there to be a death toll in the battle against Thordak. so even Kash’s death didn’t really surprise me. The twists were well done, but not entirely unexpected. While it would certainly be sad to see Vex mourn Percy, the little moment that really touched me wasn’t just the result of Laura Bailey’s actions.

No, it was when I saw Vex holding the special arrowhead that Percy had made for her in Season 2 as he sobbed at his tomb that the emotions started to rise much more than I expected. Whether this was Chekhov’s arrowhead or not remains to be seen; What I do know for sure is that I didn’t see the callback to season 2 coming.

And the appearance of the arrowhead was small enough that no one in-universe even noticed, so I have to give kudos to the show for packing an emotional punch into what can more or less be an Easter egg. I’m sure I’m not the only one who had a reaction to it! We certainly did that get far away from spicy scenes.

Matt Mercer on Vox Machina’s best running gag

Considering that the three most recent episodes contain many sad moments, it may be wise to think about something happier ahead of the finale, when there is still so much left to resolve and possibly regret. When I spoke to the cast of Critical Role about Season 3, I took the opportunity to ask Matt Mercer about a joke that’s been making the rounds The legend of Vox Machina from the beginning, and I don’t even mean doors. I’m talking about the hidden Matts.

If the DM of the Dungeons & Dragons game inspired that LOVMFrom start to finish, Matt Mercer hasn’t had one main hero to voice, but has instead voiced characters ranging from Sylas Briarwood to Orthax to Umbrasyl to… well, the spice guy who tried to sell drugs to Scanlan. The animators have added small cameos from Mercer to the series, going back to the very first episode and continuing into Season 3.

I asked Mercer if he knows in advance when he’ll make an animated cameo on the show, and he said:

It’s a surprise when I see it. It’s for the art design meetings, when they’re checking all the different sources and upcoming designs for approval or notes, and they’ll just show the next slide for this one little character, or this one little moment, and it’s my face again. I honestly don’t know how many of them are just artists having fun with me, and how many of them are Sam (Riegel) and Travis (Willingham) on the side saying, ‘Make these Matt, just to mess with them.’ Either way, it’s always a fun and embarrassing moment that I give up, because I think it’s also a nice nod to where this all came from.

Well, Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham co-wrote the season 3 premiere with the Spice Guy, and one of the first clips released ahead of the new season was of that particular scene. If you want to refresh your memory (or just enjoy Matt Mercer, the spice merchant again), take a look:

Matt Mercer isn’t the only cast member who happily commented on the fun of hiding cameos in the animation, either. When I talked to Liam O’Brien, Ashley Johnson, and Travis Willingham about the group going to hell, we also discussed the quick moment in the Season 3 trailer of a Matt Mercer lookalike being devoured by parasites. The voice actors said:

Liam O’Brien: “It’s so sad to see that Matthew Mercer is there (in hell) for some reason.”
Travis Willingham: “You can find him almost anywhere. He had an unfortunate experience there.”
Ashley Johnson: “Oh yeah, you can find it anywhere.”

Shall The legend of Vox Machina squeeze in even more Matt Mercer cameos before the final credits of Season 3 roll? On that front, only time will tell, as the heroes still have a lot to accomplish in just three episodes. After Raishan had the upper hand for most of the first nine (except for Keyleth), they certainly won’t be able to beat her as quickly as Vorugal!

There’s also the question of whether Percy’s story is really over. Vex’s resurrection in season 2 (which was part of what made me a fan of The legend of Vox Machina) proved that death doesn’t have to persist in this universe, but Vex was also still warm when Vax made his deal to bring her back. Percy has been dead for a while, so is this the end of his story and was Vex’s arrowhead just an Easter egg?

Find out in the last three episodes of The legend of Vox Machina Season 3, which debuts on Thursday, October 24 on Amazon Prime Video. The first two seasons both ended with significant cliffhangers, so it should be interesting for fans to see how Critical Role wraps up the latest story this time around. At the time of writing, Amazon has not yet confirmed whether or not this is the case Vox machine will return for season 4.
