Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers reportedly wants to leave the New York Jets after the team’s disastrous 2024 season.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Rodgers’ relationship with Jets owner Woody Johnson has been “strained for months,” and while he wants to continue playing next season, he would rather do so elsewhere.

In Rodgers’ first full season as the Jets’ starter, the team performed well below expectations, posting a 3–8 record to date, which is tied with the New England Patriots for last place in the AFC East.

During his 18-year career with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers was a 10-time Pro Bowler, four-time NFL MVP, one-time Super Bowl champion and one-time Super Bowl MVP, but when Green Bay decided to move on with Jordan Love as the starting quarterback, the Jets came knocking.

New York acquired Rodgers in a blockbuster trade ahead of the 2023 season, raising hopes the Jets would reach the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Instead, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the Jets’ fourth offensive play of the regular season and missed the rest of the year, forcing New York to return to No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson at quarterback.

After another non-playoff season, the Jets moved on from Wilson and Rodgers was back in time for the start of the 2024 season, but it was more of the same for Gang Green.

Not only were the Jets just 3-8 and on the verge of missing the playoffs again, but they fired both head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas during the 2024 campaign.

Additionally, a bombshell report came out this week with ESPN’s Rich Cimini showing that Johnson floated the idea of benching Rodgers on September 30 after the Jets suffered a 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos.

One source who attended the meeting thought it was “said in jest,” while others felt Johnson meant it. Either way, the mere mention of Rodgers being benched a month into the season suggests some sort of rift between the owner and the quarterback.

Rodgers, who turns 41 on Dec. 2, has one year left on his contract, so the Jets should release or trade him so he can play for another team in 2025.

Considering Rodgers’ resume and the fact that he’s a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer, he has nothing left to prove, but the Jets debacle wouldn’t be the ideal way for him to end his storied career.

It’s not yet clear where Rodgers could end up, but if a quarterback-needy team can’t secure a draft pick high enough to select Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Miami’s Cam Ward, Rodgers could be an attractive one-year option to a quarterback. of the future is found.
