“A Villain’s Job Is To Get Canceled” – Top WWE Star

During an interview on The Pivot, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes was asked about a possible heel turn in the future. Here’s what the WWE’s top babyface had to say about it:

“As a heel in wrestling these days, it’s really hard to be a heel. What is a heel? When a heel actively tries to take something away from you that you love. You hear people in wrestling say that there’s a wrong kind of heat. There really is no such thing as a wrong kind of heat, as long as you can handle it. As long as you can handle it.

Nowadays people get canceled for everything. Every hour someone gets canceled and canceled again. The job of a heel is to get canceled. The job of a heel is to not be cool and not sell merchandise.

In wrestling, the term is more associated with The Rock types who aren’t really heels. He’s just The Rock. He’s in a Disney movie. He’s beloved. Watching him is a good example. You really have to go out of your way to upset people and do something.

In this case (heading into WrestleMania 40), he made them very angry because he was taking a spot. He was smart enough to know, ‘That’s a good spot to be in.’ Most people are uncomfortable in that spot. Most people don’t want to be hated. John Bradshaw Layfield, you couldn’t sell his merchandise. Not even in his hometown. If there were JBL shirts, he would personally go to the stands and make sure they weren’t there. He was meant to be hated. He wanted you to cheer for John (Cena) and Eddie Guerrero. That’s a tough question.

There’s a beauty in being able to commit to being a villain. It’s a unique space creatively. You have to be really vulnerable and open and bloody hungry in how you are on the mic.

There’s a growing cult of fans who want to see that happen for me at some point. If you really want that, it’s scorched earth. You might think, ‘We don’t like that.’ You really have to be scorched earth, and in 2024, nobody can understand that. You’re not meant to be cool. You’re not meant to be the next Rock. You’re meant to be a bad guy.”

During an interview with Chris Van Vliet last month, The Undertaker said that Cody’s biggest career in the WWE will be as a heel:

“I think he’s doing great, I think he’s going to have a great run as a babyface, but I think he’s going to do even better as a heel. There’s just something about Cody to me that I can see him as a heel… it’s a pipe dream because right now he’s really making it as a babyface.”
