NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

A red flag warning is in effect from 10am this morning until 6pm today due to wind and low relative humidity in all leeward areas.

The National Weather Service today issued a red flag warning for leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands, warning of hazardous fire conditions due to locally strong trade winds and low relative humidity.

The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and applies to the leeward portions of the islands of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. Wind speeds are expected to range from 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, the NWS said. Relative humidity can drop to 40 to 45 percent.

Weather officials warn that the combination of high winds, dry fuels and low humidity could lead to extreme fire behavior. Fires that ignite can spread quickly, but the warning does not predict new fires.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor fires and park vehicles in areas where there is no dry vegetation, as exhaust systems can cause fires. In addition, activities that could cause sparks should be postponed until the wind subsides.
