A member of the British Parliament has been suspended from the Labor Party after video of apparent assault

LONDON (AP) — A member of Britain’s parliament was suspended by the Labor Party on Sunday after a video emerged of him punching a man and knocking a man to the ground.

Mike Amesbury, 55, from Runcorn and Helsby in north-west England, was suspended pending an investigation into the incident which took place early on Saturday morning.

Surveillance footage obtained by the Mail Online showed Amesbury punching a man in the face on a sidewalk and knocking him into the street. He then continued to hit the man as he lay on the ground as others shouted for him to stop.

Amesbury had issued a statement Saturday saying he had contacted authorities and would cooperate with any investigation. Cheshire Police said they were investigating a reported attack on Main Street in Frodsham.

“Last night I was involved in an incident that occurred after I felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends,” Amesbury said.

On Saturday, a video emerged on social media showing Amesbury cursing a man on the street. Amesbury pointed his finger at the man and shouted, “You’ll never threaten me again, will you?”

Amesbury had said on social media Friday that he was attending a local meeting about police and community safety.

Last year a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking Amesbury at his constituency office in Frodsham.
