A massive Russian airstrike on Zaporizhia has left ten people dead and more than forty injured

Most important developments on November 7:

  • A Russian attack on Zaporizhia kills 9 people, injures 42 and damages the hospital
  • Ukraine may have targeted Iranian weapons supply routes during the attack in Dagestan, media suggest
  • South Korea has not ruled out supplying weapons to Ukraine, the president says
  • Russian drone attack on Kiev damages buildings and causes fires in five districts

Russian forces attacked the city of Zaporizhia on November 7, killing 10 people and wounding at least 41 others, local authorities said.

Russia has hit Zaporizhia five times using guided aerial bombs. The attack partially destroyed an apartment complex and houses and damaged a cancer hospital, according to the statement.

The victims included a 1-year-old boy, Governor Ivan Fedorov said. Other children were among the injured.

Emergency services completed search and rescue operations and recovered the body of another man from the rubble at around 1:30 pm on November 8. This brought the death toll from the attack to 10.

After the attack, President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Kyiv’s partners to provide Ukraine with more air defense systems and lift restrictions on attacks by Western long-range weapons on targets deep inside Russia.

“Every Russian attack not only kills people and destroys lives, but also destroys the meaning of words about the lack of talks with Russia and phone calls to the Kremlin,” he added.

Ukrainian forces may have targeted routes in Dagestan used by Iran to supply weapons to Russia, the war zone media outlet reported on November 6.

Dagestan authorities reported that on the morning of November 6 they had intercepted a drone attack over Kaspiysk, a port city on the Caspian Sea, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from the front line. Ukraine’s military intelligence was behind the attack, an agency source said. told the Kiev Independent.

In the first Ukrainian attack on a naval base in Dagestan, at least two ships – missile ships Tatarstan and Dagestan – were damaged in the attack, and possibly several small Project 21631 ships, the source said. The Kiev Independent could not immediately verify the claims.

While the precise consequences of the Ukrainian attack are difficult to determine, the recent attack is still “significant in several respects,” war zone experts said.

The port in Dagestan is not only a base for the Russian Caspian Fleet and various military units of the Russian Armed Forces, but is also located along the routes that Iran uses to supply weapons to Russia.

Until the recent Ukrainian attack, this route was considered safe for transportation because it was likely beyond the reach of Ukrainian weapons.

While Russian authorities claimed to have intercepted a single drone in mid-air, a video shared on social media appears to show another drone hitting its target, resulting in a large explosion.

The incident took place about 15 kilometers from a local airport, news channel Mash claimed, identifying the drone as a Ukrainian A-22 Flying Fox drone.

Nearby Makhachkala Airport has suspended operations indefinitely due to the incident, local authorities said.

South Korea "not ruling out" supplying arms to Ukraine, president says

South Korea will not rule out supplying weapons to Ukraine in light of deepening cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said at a press conference on November 7.

“Now, depending on the level of North Korean involvement, we will gradually adjust our support strategy in phases,” Yoon told the media.

“This means that we are not ruling out the possibility of supplying weapons.”

Russian-North Korean ties reached new levels when Pyongyang sent about 12,000 troops to join Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Yoon previously said that in response, Seoul could revise its ban on providing direct military aid to a war zone.

South Korea has provided humanitarian and non-lethal aid to Ukraine but refused to supply weapons, citing legal restrictions. Some media reports last year claimed that the country was secretly supplying artillery shells to Ukraine through the US, although the South Korean government denied the reports.

It remains unclear what weapons South Korea is considering, although Yoon noted that “defensive weapons” would be a priority. A source in South Korea’s presidential office told Yonhap news agency that an immediate delivery of 155mm artillery shells is currently not on the table.

Russian drone attack on Kyiv damages buildings, causes fires in five districts

Russia launched a drone strike on Kiev overnight on November 7, hitting a residential building in the capital, the Kyiv Military Administration said.

According to the military government, the drone strike caused “significant damage” to a unit in the apartment complex in the city’s Holosiivskyi district.

The military government also reported a major fire nearby caused by falling drone debris at a car repair shop.

According to a Kiev Independent journalist on the scene, several explosions were heard on the outskirts of Kiev around 1 a.m. local time.

The Ukrainian air force warned throughout the night that Russian attack drones were near the city.

Around 6 a.m. local time, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko posted on Telegram that wreckage had also fallen in the Pechersk district, causing a fire on the 33rd floor of a residential building. The fire was under control shortly afterwards.

Wreckage from the ongoing attack also fell in the Podil district, where a two-story house caught fire, in the Obolon district, where a business center on the upper floors caught fire, and in the Solomianskyi district, where debris both fell in no time in the garden of a private home and on a private medical facility.

One person was hospitalized in Solomianskyi district after the attack. No further details are available at this time.

The latest attack is the latest in a series of drone attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine’s capital.
