A driver died after an accident on Wednesday afternoon. What the police say happened

SOUTHAMPTON TWP. – One person was fatally injured in an accident on Wednesday afternoon.

State police have not identified the driver, but said the vehicle was traveling north on Cumberland Highway, Route 160, about 300 feet south of Palo Alto Road at 4:50 p.m. It was raining and the area was dark with no street lights, police said. A tree had fallen across the road, from the west side of the highway to the east side.

According to police, the car struck the fallen tree near the windshield and roof. The vehicle then continued north and left the west side of the road, coming to an uncontrolled final resting place west of the highway with its front end striking a utility pole.

According to police, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
