A complete look at the Olympic controversy between Jordan Chiles and Ana Barbosu

But then her coaches filed a request on her behalf. According to NBC Olympics, “A request is a verbal challenge to the score of a routine. It is followed by a written request that must be submitted before the end of the rotation. The challenge can only be submitted after the gymnast’s final score is posted and before the next gymnast’s routine ends.”

If a gymnast is last to perform, there is a one-minute time limit, which begins after the score is displayed on the scoreboard, according to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

The investigation into the score concerned a jump in Chiles’ routine, the so-called tour jeté full.

“She received no credit for this skill in team qualifying and team finals,” said Olympian and NBC gymnastics analyst John Roethlisberger said during the broadcast. “In the first evaluation of the skill, the judges did not give her any credit for it. I spoke to Cecile And Laurent Landiher coaches, and they said, ‘We thought she did a much better job here in the final. So we thought we have nothing to lose, let’s do an investigation.’”

After evaluating Chiles’ routine, the judges accepted the request and awarded Chiles 0.1 points for the vault, raising her score to 13.766, good for third place.

As a result, Chiles, who burst into tears when she saw the results, won bronze. Meanwhile, Barbosu, who was already waving the Romanian flag to celebrate her own achievement, lost her place on the podium.
