US wins eighth straight Olympic women’s basketball gold in thrilling match against France | Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The US women’s basketball team won its eighth consecutive Olympic title on Sunday at the latest edition of the Olympic Games in Paris, beating host country France 67-66 in a thrilling match.

The victory was also a victory for Team USA as a whole: The win moved the Americans into a tie with China at the top of the medal table for the most gold medals. The U.S. also finished the Olympics with the most medals of any country.

The victory was no easy feat for the turnover-plagued Americans, who were pushed hard by a combative French team playing in front of a raucous home crowd. The U.S. also struggled with their shooting, going just 2 of 12 from three-point range. They also shot 79.4% from the free throw line compared to France’s 100%. The U.S. trailed by 10 points early in the third quarter, but used their experience when it mattered most to pull off a narrow victory that came down to the final seconds of the entire Olympics.

A’Ja Wilson led the US with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Gabby Williams, whose three-pointers brought France within one point, scored 19 points for the French.
