Second boxer at the center of gender controversy wins Olympic gold

Lin Yu-ting of the Chinese Taipei team defeated Poland’s Julia Szeremeta in the women’s featherweight final

Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei won Olympic featherweight gold in Paris on Saturday by defeating Poland’s Julia Szeremeta. The victory comes amid controversy over Lin’s gender identity.

Lin, who won unanimously, was among the athletes disqualified from the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championship in New Delhi after failing the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) gender eligibility tests. Commenting on the results, the organization’s president, Umar Kremlev, said the tests “proven to have XY chromosomes and were therefore excluded from the sporting events.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allowed Lin and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif – who was also disqualified from last year’s tournament – to compete in the Games in Paris.

Earlier this month, IOC spokesman Mark Adams claimed that all athletes “meet the admission requirements,” while casting doubt on the IBA’s testing conducted last year. On Friday, Khelif won Olympic gold by defeating China’s Yang Liu in the women’s welterweight final.

Both Lin and Khelif have been at the center of heated debate over their failed DNA tests, with some commentators arguing that it is unfair to allow people with male genetic traits to compete against female athletes. However, advocates say it is unclear whether the tests found XY chromosomes or elevated testosterone in their blood samples.

Two years ago, the IBA, led by Kremlev, a Russian citizen, lifted a ban on Russian and Belarusian boxers, becoming one of the few global sports organizations to allow athletes from the two countries to compete under their national flags and anthems, despite international sanctions. In 2023, the IOC revoked its recognition of the IBA over a perceived failure to implement governance and financial reforms, and took over the reins of boxing at the Paris Olympics.
