Stefanos Tsitsipas breaks coaching relationship with father Apostolos in a turning point

WWorld No. 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas and his father Apostolos parted ways after an early loss at the Canada Masters. Stefanos came to Montreal after losing to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals at the Olympics and was unable to quickly switch to a different surface.

Tsitsipas lost to Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4 after getting into a fight with his father and sending him off the stadium in the first set. A day later, the Greek announced that his father would no longer be part of his coaching staff. Stefanos was furious after the loss and revealed that he had expressed his concerns about his forehand to his father over the past four or five days without Apostolos having responded adequately.

The two-time Major finalist felt disappointed and decided to make a cut and reveal changes to his coaching box. Stefanos will still travel to tournaments with his father, but Apostolos will not be responsible for his son’s tennis.

Tsitsipas wanted to win a medal for Greece in Paris, where he played in Roland Garros. A few years ago he was in the final there.

By the will of the draw, Stefanos met Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals and lost 6-3, 7-6. Feeling the pain in his aching knee, Novak struggled in the second set and allowed Stefanos to build a huge lead. The Greek led 4-0, 5-2, lost three set points on serve in the ninth game and lost the tiebreak to propel the Serb through.

Stefanos traveled to Montreal without proper rest and lost in straight sets to Kei Nishikori. It was a close match and the Japanese performed better at the crucial moments and delivered his most remarkable victory in more than three years. Tsitsipas expressed his frustration and decided to part ways with his father and make a change in the coaching staff.
