The time-traveling Kingmakers film that takes you to a sword fight with a gun isn’t even out yet and it’s already getting a movie adaptation

Kingmakers, Redemption Road’s time-traveling shooter and strategy game that puts an assault rifle in a medieval sword fight, isn’t even out yet, but a film adaptation has already been secured.

In an update on Steam, the studio said it was “absolutely thrilled” that the unreleased game is “making its way to the big screen” in partnership with publisher tinyBuild and Story Kitchen.

Story Kitchen — which specializes in “the adaptation of video games and other ‘non-traditional’ IP to film and TV” shows — was founded in 2022 by Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dmitri M. Johnson. In addition to the Sonic film franchise, it is also involved in the Dredge adaptation and Pheobe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider project.

And as for the game itself? Redemption hasn’t announced a firm release date yet, but it’s still scheduled to release later this year.

“Over the past decade or so, alongside the bigger, smaller bets that publishers have made – which have also often led to formula, to conservatism – an upsurge in graphical fidelity has meant that a certain breed of game has become obsessed with detail. I love detail, and I love that games do it,” Donlan wrote when the memorable Kingsmakers teaser dropped.

“But as a trend, it can sometimes make people think that blockbusters are things that are made to be admired more than anything else. And it’s fun to see someone occasionally drive a Mazda Barracuda, or whatever it is, through that idea. Don’t admire this game. Enjoy it. Lose yourself in it. Break it and laugh wildly when it reacts to what you just did.”

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman recently spoke with four members of Road Redemption Games about the third-person shooter’s gameplay, real-time strategy elements, and the plan to have thousands of soldiers on screen at once.
