Top highlights from the first day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The 2024 Paris Olympics officially opened on Friday with a dazzling opening ceremony featuring parades on the Seine, performances by Lady Gaga and Celine Dion and a laser show on the Eiffel Tower.

Cycling and diving competitions:

In the cycling events, Anna Henderson took silver in the women’s time trial, behind Australian Grace Brown, while American Chloe Dygert took bronze.

In the diving, Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen rose from sixth to third with an excellent final dive to win Britain’s first medal in the women’s diving event in 64 years.

Adam Peaty’s Quest for Gold:

Adam Peaty, aiming for his third consecutive 100m breaststroke gold, won his heat and semi-final. The final takes place on Sunday.

French triumph in rugby sevens:

France won gold in the men’s rugby sevens by beating Fiji 28-7 at the Stade de France. The victory ended Fiji’s unbeaten run in Olympic rugby sevens.

Strong performances in various sports:

Great Britain’s men defeated Spain 4-0 in hockey, with goals from Nick Park, Rupert Shipperley and Gareth Furlong. Laura Collett set an Olympic record in eventing dressage. The women’s four-scull won their heat, while the men’s quartet and women’s double scull also went through.
