Former HBCU WBB star tragically dies in Louisiana

Thanks to Grambling State Athletic Communications

GRAMBLING, La. | Grambling State Athletics remembers and mourns the passing of former Grambling/HBCU women’s basketball player Jazmin Boyd.

Boyd, a member of the Grambling State women’s basketball team from 2015 to 2019, was one of the best female basketball players to ever step foot on the historic HBCU campus. Her accomplishments include being named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Freshman of the Year in 2016. She followed up that stellar season by earning All-SWAC honors again in 2017.

In 2018, she helped the Lady Tigers win the SWAC Tournament and secure a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly two decades. Boyd also scored more than 1,000 points during her college career.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our former female basketball student-athlete and GSU alumna, Jazmin Boyd,” said Grambling State Vice President for Athletics Dr. Trayvean Scott. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, teammates and everyone touched by her remarkable life. We ask that you please keep the Boyd family in your prayers during this very difficult time.”

“It’s so tragic, we’re all in shock,” Scott told KNOE News in Monroe, Louisiana. “We’re all feeling it right now.” “Our hearts and thoughts are with her family … from Grambling all the way to Hattiesburg, Mississippi,” Scott added.

“I got the call last night and I was very sad to hear that it was her. Jaz was a great spirit, a great competitor and an overall great person,” said her former coach, Freddie Murray.

Boyd’s outstanding performance was highlighted in 2019 when she was honored following the Lady Tigers’ win over Alcorn State.

Her cause of death has not been officially released, but HBCU Sports reports that sources have told them Boyd died in a car accident near Ruston, Louisiana.
