Why isn’t Olivier Giroud playing for LAFC against Seattle Sounders tonight, despite signing two months ago?

Amidst all the attention Inter Miami is getting this season, LAFC have struck gold. The Californian team had a remarkable season last year, reaching the MLS Cup final. This time around, however, they are also favorites to win the Western Conference, in a fierce battle with their LA rivals LA Galaxy. It is the arrival of French striker Olivier Giroud that could make a difference for Steve Cherundolo’s team. But as they face a tough Seattle Sounders tonight at Lumen Field, the former Arsenal star will not make his debut for the club, which has fans curious. Why is Giroud not making his debut tonight despite signing his contract 2 months ago?

Giroud has retired from European football and opted for LAFC thanks to their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. However, the star will not be part of the club’s squad for tomorrow’s match as he is not expected to arrive until after August 1. While the forward is eligible to play for the Black and Gold Falcons, the player should get plenty of rest after a disappointing season with AC Milan and the 2024 European Championship. Giroud has signed a contract that runs through the 2025 season, with an option to extend it until 2026.
