UVA’s All-Time Records Update vs. the New ACC

The Atlantic Coast Conference, which some claim was a pioneer in 21st century conference realignment, officially rejoined this most recent wave of conference expansion with the addition of Cal, SMU and Stanford beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.

Now that the conference has expanded to 18 teams (17 in football), we thought it would be a good time to crack open the history books and see how the Virginia men’s basketball program compares to its conference brethren, both new and old. Below, we’ll analyze UVA’s all-time record (including regular season and postseason play) against every team in the new Atlantic Coast Conference, as well as the Cavaliers’ record against those teams under the leadership of Tony Bennett.

Before we reveal the full list, let’s first summarize some notable points:

  1. Virginia has a winning record against all but five teams in the new ACC: Duke, NC State, North Carolina, Stanford and Wake Forest.
  2. UVA under Tony Bennett has a winning record against all but two teams in the new ACC: Duke and Stanford.
  3. Virginia is 630-649 (49.26%) all-time against the current ACC, but 347 of those losses have come against just three teams: Duke, North Carolina and NC State.
  4. Of those three teams, Tony Bennett has winning records against two of them: North Carolina (14-11) and NC State (16-7). Bennett has also handled UVA’s ACC-mandated rivalry games (the two teams the Cavaliers must play twice each year) well: Virginia Tech (19-10) and Louisville (18-2).
  5. Tony Bennett finished 12-7 against Roy Williams, winning his last seven games against the Hall of Famer. Bennett also went 5-1 against another Hall of Famer Rick Pitino in Louisville.
  6. Only Coach K kept Tony Bennett at bay until his retirement, with a 13-5 record against the Cavaliers after Bennett became head coach. Duke still holds a commanding 124-54 all-time record against Virginia and is 7-4 against UVA at John Paul Jones Arena, one of the few visiting teams with a winning record in that building.
  7. As for the new ACC, Virginia has met the conference’s three new members 11 times and has gone 4-7 in those games.
  8. Virginia and SMU have played each other only once; the Cavaliers defeated the Mustangs 76-73 during a tournament in Corpus Christi in November 2013.
  9. Virginia is 2-0 against California, having defeated the Golden Bears in a home-and-away series in 2015 and 2016. The two games were certainly close, however, as they were decided by a combined six points.
  10. Virginia is 1-7 all-time against Stanford, with the Cardinal claiming each of the last six meetings, including two in Bennett’s first two seasons at UVA. Stanford and Virginia will meet this season for the first time since 2010, and the Cavaliers will be looking to make up some ground in the all-time series.
