Wales head coach Warren Gatland explains decision on Cory Hill captaincy

Head coach Warren Gatland explains his controversial decision to appoint Cory Hill as Wales captain for Friday’s match against Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

Forward Hill was involved in an incident in May 2021 where a woman’s home was damaged, which left her fearing for her own life and that of her children.

Hill was not charged by police but apologised in a statement at the time and again expressed his regret at the press conference when he announced Wales would play the Reds.

Gatland said he had had a “frank conversation” with the 32-year-old Hill about the incident, adding that “young men make mistakes”.
