Former World Cup winners likely to join Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals have hit the reset button on their coaching staff and are in the process of selecting Indian cricketers for coaching positions.

The top brass are reportedly already in talks with two former world champions and it is highly unlikely that current Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly will also act as head coach for the 2025 edition.

The franchise is keen on a more hands-on head coach who will follow both international and domestic cricket very aggressively. Citing Gautam Gambhir as an example, a well-placed source says that the franchise wants a head coach who digs deep and is looking for a stable coaching set-up.

“Ganguly has a lot on his plate already – he is planning several things for the franchise as Director of Cricket. The team needs a very hands-on coach who follows the circuit very aggressively. Like Gautam Gambhir does. It is no surprise that he has been so successful as a mentor.

“He keeps track of players, both international and national. The management does not want a temporary arrangement for the position of head coach, as it is the season just after the mega auction, while the new cycle is starting,” said a source close to the developments.

The decision to cut ties with Ponting was taken last month and now the focus is likely to shift to the scouting team after the backroom staff is finalised. Delhi Capitals are in dire need of an overhaul of the scouting team and established names are likely to replace the existing group.

No decision has been made on this topic yet, but it is likely that a discussion will take place when the owners meet after the current Major League Cricket season has concluded.

“The only person who had played some sort of cricket in the scouting team was Jagrit Anand (white-ball games for Delhi). After he was dismissed, the remaining two Shyantanu Chokhani and Adhishwar have not played any serious cricket. And no wonder the scouting team’s results have been very disappointing. Is there any cricketer who comes to your mind who was dug up by the scouting team? No,” the source adds.

Ponting was in charge of the franchise for seven seasons and they failed to win the title even once. The Aussie’s best outing came in 2020, when the franchise finished second after losing to Mumbai Indians in the title race. An empty cupboard prompted the owners to look for a new head coach.
