High Street junior volleyball to take part in a national tournament

A volleyball team of several local athletes will head to Texas this weekend for a national volleyball tournament dubbed the “crown jewel” of junior club volleyball.

“This is a testament to High Street Athletics’ elite environment, hard work, dedication and teamwork throughout the season,” said Kilee Bailey, owner of High Street Volleyball and head varsity coach at Hudson. “The players and coaches have spent countless hours practicing.”

Bailey and High Street Volleyball has increased its presence on the local volleyball scene in recent years as the program has become a feeder system for volleyball players in Lenawee County and nearby counties.

This particular 13-u team is the first area team to earn a National Division bid in the USA Volleyball junior national division. The tournament will take place next weekend in Dallas. To make the event, teams had to win a national qualifying tournament, which High Street did.

Bailey said the team has had many challenges along the way as they have played against some of the best teams in the country.

“This team ranked between 19th and 27th in the country this season,” she said. “They have a tournament championship, a second-place finish in the tournament and four different top-five finishes.”

The team started training in November. They won tournaments in Cleveland and Cedar Point, Ohio, and finished second at a premier event in Kentucky. They have also competed in Missouri and Indiana.

Local athletes include Jayce Beal and Elsie Beal of Hudson, Brooklynn Kranz, Zoey Riddle and Addison Loftis of Clinton and Hattie Fansler of Lenawee Christian. The rest of the team consists of Reese Williams of Roscommon and Kara Nowak of DeWitt.

The 13-year-old girls prepared for the national tournament by playing a number of events in Grand Rapids – where they took first place in one – and in Pittsburgh. She said it takes a lot of dedication and effort not only from the girls but also from their families to perform so strongly at a national event.

“They are focused and determined to put on a strong show and represent their community to the best of their ability,” she said.

High Street has several teams of different age categories and will start tryouts for a new season in mid-July.

“We look forward to finding new and additional ways to continue supporting those around us, from youth programs to college athletes,” said Bailey.
