Soccer for Dreamers, an American non-governmental organization, has been educating young female soccer players in Accra about menstrual hygiene.

Sylvia Akwaboah, President of Soccer for Dreamers, led the initiative and said the main objective was to educate young female footballers about menstrual hygiene.

She added that the training had an impact, as was evident from the young girls’ appreciation for education.

“It was a really impactful day. We managed to give the girls a talk about menstrual hygiene; we gave them the menstrual caps; we gave them all the football gear they needed and you could see how much they appreciated it when you looked at them; especially just hearing about menstrual hygiene, because we talked about myths and facts.

“For example, about menstruation and some things that they didn’t even know. It’s very satisfying to see that if not something, we’ve been here to teach the girls something,” she told GhanaWeb.

The NGO also donated supplies to 10 teams. This is the third year in a row that they are donating and the fourth edition of their initiative.

“This is actually the fourth edition and the third year of donations and we have managed to donate everything together here at the GFA (Ghana Football Association). We have donated to 10 teams. We have another team that we could not bring here but we are going to their training grounds to give it to them,” Sylvia added.
