Ben Stokes eyes James Anderson as England’s fast bowling coach after his Test retirement

Ben Stokes eyes James Anderson as England’s fast bowling coach after his Test retirement

The role of fast bowling coach is currently held by Neil Killeen, although his involvement with the Test side has been limited. Anderson’s potential appointment could mark a significant change in the coaching set-up for England’s pace attack.

England captain Ben Stokes has expressed his desire to see James Anderson move to a fast bowling coaching role following the legendary seamer’s retirement from Test cricket. Anderson brought the curtain down on a glittering career with four wickets in England’s innings win over the West Indies at Lord’s.

New role for James Anderson?

Ben Stokes is keen to use James Anderson’s unrivalled experience and knowledge of the game to help shape the next generation of England fast bowlers. The England captain believes Anderson’s insights could prove invaluable as the team prepares for the Ashes in Australia in 2025.

If he has a desire to help bowlers progress, as he did with his own career, I honestly can’t think of a better person to influence all fast bowlers.” said Ben Stokes.

Anderson, who finished his Test career with 704 wickets, has indicated his willingness to support the team as a mentor. “I’m certainly not going to tell anyone how to bowl,” he said. “I will be a sounding board – I will be there if they need me.”

Boost for England’s fast bowling attack

While James Anderson’s retirement is undoubtedly a loss for the England team, Stokes’ plan to retain his services as a mentor could prove to be a masterstroke. With Anderson’s guidance, England’s young fast bowlers could benefit enormously from the wisdom of one of the greatest sailors of all time.

The role of fast bowling coach is currently held by Neil Killeen, although his involvement with the Test side has been limited. Anderson’s potential appointment could mark a significant change in the coaching set-up for England’s pace attack.
