Wimbledon 2024 LIVE: Tennis scores and updates from the women’s semi-finals

Djokovic accuses Wimbledon crowd of ‘disrespect’ after Rune win

It’s the day of the women’s singles semi-finals at Wimbledon, where 2022 champion Elena Rybakina headlines the four players battling it out for the Venus Rosewater Dish on Saturday afternoon.

Rybakina is the overwhelming favourite against the remaining contenders who have far less grass-court pedigree than the Kazakh. She needed just an hour to dismiss Elina Svitolina in Wednesday’s quarter-finals and now faces former French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova when she returns to Centre Court.

It is the first time since her victory at Roland Garros in 2021 that Krejcikova has advanced beyond the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament. The 28-year-old Czech had never advanced beyond the fourth round at the All England Club.

That’s still a relatively starry Wimbledon resume compared to Jasmine Paolini, who had never won a grass-court match until this summer as she builds on her shock run to the French Open final. Paolini is also the first Italian woman to reach the singles semi-finals in SW19 and will face Donna Vekic, who reached her first Grand Slam semi-final at the 43rd time of asking when she ended qualifier Lulu Sun’s dream run in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Alex de Minaur withdraws from Wimbledon before quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic

The Australian No. 1 and world No. 9, who is enjoying the best season of his career, tore a cartilage in his hip in Monday’s final match against Arthur Fils in his fourth-round match.

De Minaur’s expression changed immediately as he claimed victory and despite playing down the injury in his subsequent press conference, the 25-year-old’s withdrawal was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon when he admitted to feeling a “loud crack” in the final three points of Monday’s match.

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic will therefore advance to Friday’s semi-finals without any problems.

Queen Camilla enjoys surprise ‘escape’ to Wimbledon

The Queen made a surprise visit to Wimbledon and said it was “so nice to have a day out”.

Camilla travelled to south-west London to watch the tenth day of the tennis championship.

For her day out at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, she wore a cream linen dress with large giraffe motifs by Anna Valentine and a Jack Russell brooch by Van Cleef and Arpels.

Camilla told former player Laura Robson, who works in international player relations at Wimbledon, that it was “so nice to have a day out”.

Donna Vekic outshines Lulu Sun to reach first Wimbledon semifinal

Donna Vekic ended Lulu Sun’s fairytale Wimbledon qualifying run to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final.

SW19 sensation Sun won the first set and looked set to become only the second woman to make it through qualifying and reach the last four.

But the 28-year-old Croatian Vekic narrowly won the second set and then won the third set 5-7 6-4 6-1.

“It was a really tough match, she played unbelievable, I feel like she really pushed me to the limit,” said an emotional Vekic.

“I felt like I was dying in the first two sets, but I kept going hoping I would get a chance and eventually I got one.

“I have a whole box full of people there and without them I wouldn’t be here.”

Jasmine Paolini makes history for Italy with convincing quarter-final victory

Jasmine Paolini kept the Italian flag flying at Wimbledon by beating Emma Navarro to reach the semi-finals.

Centre Court was still reeling from the defeat suffered by Italian star player and world number one Jannik Sinner at the hands of Daniil Medvedev when Paolini took to the court.

The 28-year-old seventh seed defeated American Navarro 6-2 6-1 to become the first Italian woman to reach the last four in SW19.

“It’s amazing to win on this special court and I’m so happy to be in the semi-finals,” she said.

“It’s so special, a dream to be here in this position. I used to watch finals on this pitch as a kid, it’s strange to be here.”

Barbora Krejcikova tames Jelena Ostapenko to reach semifinals

Latvia’s energetic Jelena Ostapenko blew herself up as Barbora Krejcikova reached her first Wimbledon semi-final.

Ostapenko had risen rapidly through the women’s rankings, losing just 15 games in four matches, with a string of stunning winners.

But when the unforced errors on court 1 far exceeded the winning margin, Krejcikova was able to take advantage.

The quarter-final was a breeze and yielded no more than eight shots, but Krejcikova took advantage and won 6-4 7-6 (4) to set up a last-four clash with 2022 winner Elena Rybakina.

The risky style that makes cagey Wimbledon favorite Elena Rybakina unbeatable

The Elena Rybakina experience rarely lasts long. That’s not to say you don’t get your money’s worth when you watch the Kazakh star – quite the opposite. She’s a whirling dervish of entertainment.

It’s just that, especially on grass, she has no interest in long rallies, preferring a no guts, no glory, blink-and-you’ll-miss-her approach to most points, meaning that both the winner and the unforced error add up pretty quickly. When she’s more hit than miss – as she was on her way to the 2022 Wimbledon title and looks set to be again this year – it’s hard to see how you’d stop her.

Elina Svitolina tried in this quarterfinal, she really did, but her opponent’s point-finishing flashes generally found the lines rather than the grass behind them. Combined with a fierce serve that landed six aces to reach a tournament high of 31 and saw her win 84 percent of points on her first serve, the result was a brutal 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 61 minutes.
