PCB chief Naqvi meets coaches from Pakistan

Assistant coach Azhar Mahmood was also present at the meeting

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has met with Pakistan coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie to discuss important matters, sources told Geo News on Tuesday.

Naqvi, who was elected unopposed as the PCB chairman, decided to draw up a comprehensive plan to improve the batting, bowling and fielding of the Pakistan cricket team.

In addition to Gillespie and Kirsten, assistant coach and former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was also present at the meeting where important decisions were made.

According to sources, the fitness of the players was discussed extensively and all the players present agreed that there is no dearth of talent in Pakistan but there is a dearth of good combinations.

The coaches informed Naqvi about the plan to improve the team’s performance and the PCB chief agreed to their plan.

Naqvi also assured Kirsten and Gillespie that they have full support from the board when it comes to coaching the players.

It is worth noting that Gillespie and Kirsten were appointed as Pakistan’s red and white ball coaches for two years respectively.

Kirsten, who led India to the World Cup in 2011, has already started his journey with the Pakistan cricket team, coaching them during the five T20I series against England and the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Gillespie will lead Pakistan for the first time in the red-ball series against Bangladesh, to be played in late August in the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

During his first press conference as red-ball coach, Gillespie expressed his enthusiasm for working with the team.

“I am excited to be working with the Pakistan cricket team,” Gillespie said. “During the last tour to Australia, Pakistan lost the series 3-0 but they played well. There were times in the series when they dominated the opposition as well.
