Madison Schemitz’s ex-boyfriend pleads guilty to Ponte Vedra stabbing

Less than two months after walking across the stage at her graduation ceremony to a standing ovation, 18-year-old Madison Schemitz has one less obstacle to overcome: a lawsuit against the ex-boyfriend who stalked her to a Ponte Vedra Beach restaurant and repeatedly stabbed her and her mother.

Spencer Pearson, 19, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, according to St. Johns County court records.

Pearson and Schemitz were star athletes at Ponte Vedra High School, he in football and she in softball. On June 3, 2023, Schemitz and their mother Jaclyn Roge met up with some friends at Mr. Chubby’s Wings. Shortly after they sat down, they saw Pearson walk past them and decided to leave, according to court documents. When they got to their car, security video shows Pearson followed them and attacked Schemitz, stabbing her multiple times.

Her mother tried to intervene and also suffered cuts until bystander Kennedy tackled Armstrong Pearson. He was also struck, but it prevented the attack.

Pearson then began slitting his own neck until more help arrived, the Sheriff’s Office said. Everyone survived, but Schemitz was paralyzed from the attack.

Schemitz has learned to walk again after more than a year of rehabilitation and continues to share her story and promote the One Love Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending domestic abuse.

Pearson is expected to be sentenced on September 13.
