Students from government schools in Tamil Nadu are top performers in hockey competition

CHENNAI: As many as 25 government schools in Tamil Nadu topped the two-day district-level School Hockey League, which concluded on Tuesday.

The event was organized by Tamil Nadu School Hockey League in collaboration with TN Hockey Unit. As many as 306 schools from across the state had registered for the event to participate in the competition.

Of the 306 schools, 81 are government and subsidized schools. And of the participating government schools, no less than 25 government and subsidized schools topped the rankings and qualified for the advanced level.

In addition, 21 schools took second place. Meanwhile, the best performing teams have qualified for zone level.

Meanwhile, as part of teaching sports among government school students, the state government has implemented various programmes to nurture sporting talent among school children and develop national and international level sportspersons from TN.

As part of this, competitions for school children are also organised at zonal, district and state level. In TN, 2,676 students from TN participated in the sports events organised by the School Games Federation of India. They have won 95 gold, 112 silver and 202 bronze medals at the national level.

To further encourage students, a budget of Rs 12.5 crore has been released for school sports activities in 2024-25.
