Peoria Notre Dame graduate becomes program’s first female professional soccer player

PEORIA — Autumn Weeks made history Monday by becoming the first Peoria Notre Dame female soccer player to sign with a professional team.

The former PND star announced a contract with Lexington SC of the USL Super League, a new circuit set to launch in August as a competitor to the established NWSL.

Weeks was a two-time Journal Star Girls Soccer Player of the Year while at Notre Dame, then played three seasons at IUPUI. She transferred to Louisville for her final two seasons of college, playing on six college teams along the way that reached the NCAA tournament. Weeks played nearly 1,800 minutes and scored a goal and added an assist as a defender during her two seasons at Louisville.

“I’ve enjoyed her coaching immensely,” Notre Dame coach Ben Ralph said of the center back. “One of the best kids I’ve ever had. Autumn handles herself well on and off the field. She’s extremely talented. Her work ethic was one of the best I’ve ever seen and that’s why she was able to reach the professional level.

“She was a great teammate, always excited for the success of the players around her and the team. One of the most dominant players I’ve ever seen at this high school.”

The 2019 Irish graduate and East Peoria native, a two-time All-Region and IHSSCA All-State selection, was hoping to be picked in the National Women’s Soccer League draft on January 12 but was not chosen. She has continued to work on her skills and fitness, culminating in a professional debut with Lexington, which will be part of a Super League lineup in 2024 that includes Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Brooklyn, Spokane, Tampa Bay, Fort Lauderdale and Washington D.C.

Chattanooga, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Madison and Oakland will join in subsequent seasons.
