The Rugby Football League has launched an investigation into claims by Widnes Vikings player Nick Gregson that he was deliberately attacked during their Championship defeat to Swinton Lions.

Gregson, who previously played for the Greater Manchester club, posted a message on X, formerly Twitter, claiming Swinton’s team had been told to focus on his shoulder, which he dislocated earlier this season.

In the post, Gregson also shared a photo he claimed was posted in Swinton’s dressing room, showing him with a noose around his neck and the words “bully him” written above it.

Swinton has said they “deny the accuracy of the allegations” and are in contact with the RFL and their lawyers.

Widnes have lodged a formal complaint with the RFL, who told BBC Sport that an independent investigator has been appointed.

The striker said the injury he sustained during the match could mean he misses the rest of the season at the second level.

The 28-year-old played for Swinton for three years before moving to Widnes in November and described the photo and alleged attacks on him as “disgraceful”.

“We’re probably playing the toughest game of all for not much money and also having to work a full-time job. I’m absolutely devastated that we lost and also that I probably won’t be able to play again this year,” he said.

“There’s more to life than just rugby league and I don’t want to be involved in it if that’s what’s considered acceptable.”

Widnes, who lost Sunday’s match 24-12, said in a statement they “stand 100% behind Nick and will offer him all the support he needs”.

The Vikings are fifth in the 14-team championship, while Swinton are 10th.
