A route of works of art will be drawn up through a city to place it in a “new light”.

Last year saw the first Sunderland Arts and Culture Trail, spread across eight locations around the city’s university.

This year it has expanded to include 32 additional locations, including a bowling alley and shops.

It was created and curated by visual artists Dale Hardy and Su Devine, who described its preparation as “an incredible journey”.

The work of 60 artists will be shown at 40 locations in the city.

The artworks include paintings, sculptures, performance art and exhibitions, including one in the city’s Winter Gardens featuring 30 pieces created by local people aged from 3 to 80.

Ms Devine added: “For us it’s not just about exhibiting the artists’ work, but also about connecting with the community and inspiring others through art.”

The path is part-funded by the government through an application by Sunderland BID, a city centre promotion organisation, which raised over £200,000.

Sharon Appleby, chief executive of Sunderland BID, said it was “delighted” to be supporting the trail again.

“I would like to express our gratitude to all the artists whose remarkable work has shown the city of Sunderland in a new light,” she said.

“It’s designed to be easy to walk across, making it an ideal way to enjoy the city’s outdoor spaces, independent businesses and venues.”

The route can be walked independently and runs until July 21.
