Drone captures epic wave action during storm warning on Lake Michigan

GRAND HAVEN, MI — The wind howled and the waves tossed as a gale warning was in effect for most of the Lake Michigan shoreline Thursday.

With a lull in the precipitation, MLive multimedia specialist Joel Bissell launched a drone to get a different perspective on the waves.

His first flight was at Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon, followed by a flight at Grand Haven State Park as surfers braved the big waves.

The ‘Gale Warning’ was put into effect by the National Weather Service from St. Joseph to Manistee on November 21. The bulletin recommended wind speeds of up to 80 km/h with precipitation.

According to the NWS, the waves were 8 to 10 feet high, with occasional waves of 45 feet and rising to 40 to 50 feet.
