Former Chicago Bears rookie coach says player didn’t experience “real football” in college

A newcomer to the Chicago Bears will have a unique adjustment to the NFL after having a bogus college football experience, his former coach says. The Bears’ rookies won’t report to training camp until July 16, after completing their final workouts at the OTAs last Wednesday.

The Bears rookie draft class of five players is small, but it is the most important and powerful group in the Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus era. With Eberflus under pressure to make the playoffs this season, the Bears need three of the five rookies they drafted to make an immediate positive impact.

The Bears already named Caleb Williams, the No. 1 pick in the draft, as their starting quarterback. Fellow first-round pick, wide receiver Rome Odunze, will be a Week 1 starter. Bears fourth-round pick Tory Taylor will also begin his NFL career on September 8 against the Tennessee Titans.

Tory Taylor hasn’t experienced “real football” yet

According to an interview with Colleen Kane of the Chicago TribuneTaylor’s special teams coach at Iowa, LeVar Woods, said Taylor has a unique adjustment coming to the NFL. The praise he received from Iowa fans won’t be the same in Chicago:

Probably some stuff in the locker room. The locker room is very different. There are 130 players here in our team. That doesn’t exist in the NFL, especially when the season is over. So that part will definitely be different for him.

And I’ve shared this with him before. When he walks into Kinnick Stadium here in Iowa City, everyone who sees him goes crazy. The fans are going crazy. They introduce him during pre-game warmups, and the fans go crazy. On his first kick of every game we had to use a silent cadence because the fans were going crazy. They cheer. They wave Australian flags in the stands.

I said to him, ‘This isn’t real football. When you go into the NFL, as soon as the punter steps on the field, everyone cheers. They don’t want to see you on the field. They want to see someone else.” So I think this will be something for him to deal with, or something a little different.

Iowa is a little different

Iowa football is known for its spectacular defense and pathetic offense. Taylor was one of Iowa’s best opportunities for the Hawkeyes to ultimately score, as he pinned opponents deep inside the 5-yard line.

Bears fans may appreciate Taylor’s kick after seeing the result, but no one wants to see him take the field for that task. That would mean that Williams and the offense won’t score.
