The Metro Detroit coach’s sudden firing is sparking outrage and rumors

The community asks the school board questions about dismissal

LIVONIA, Mich. – The firing of a longtime Livonia wrestling coach has sparked many questions and anger in the community.

David Chiola had worked in the Livonia Public Schools district for 24 years, most notably as a wrestling coach at Franklin High School.

He was fired after allegedly making comments about the presence of a transgender student that some said were mean-spirited. The school board meeting on Monday, November 19, during which his resignation was discussed, descended into chaos.

Chiola claimed he was fired without due process and that the lack of an explanation from the school board only fueled rumors of his dismissal.

A letter was sent to the student houses about his dismissal, but no explanation was given as to why. Chiola said the letter called his character into question and resulted in an explosion of rumors.

The meeting escalated even further when a speaker made disturbing accusations against Chiola without evidence, leaving his daughter in tears and the community divided over how it was all handled.
