Edmonton Oilers bring back impactful playoff player Mattias Janmark

The Edmonton Oilers have brought back “The Janitor.”

It is a multi-year deal for influential winger Mattias Janmark, three years at $1.45 million each.

David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period reports: “Janmark’s new 3-year, $4.35M deal with Edmonton has not yet been signed. Terms have been agreed upon, it will be signed tomorrow (Sunday).”

This, following a one-year, $1 million contract in 2023-24 that represented a pay cut for the veteran and a meaningful discount for the club, especially given the consistent and utilitarian nature of Janmark’s contributions.

Janmark was 4-8-12 in 71 regular season games where he was a reliable and dependable depth player. He led the team in TOI on the penalty kill. But his best hockey came in the postseason where Janmark became a real difference maker both on the stingy PK (the Oilers kill was a league record 94.3%, Oilers were 3GF, 2GA with a man in the box) and at 5v5. Offensively, he was 3-3-6 in 23 playoff games, but 2-2-4 in the 7-game Stanley Cup Final where he was one-third of a very effective third line featuring Adam Henrique and Connor Brown.

Janmark can jump into the Top 6 if needed. But he is a bottom 6 player, albeit with above average speed, tenacity, intelligence, a strong defensive conscience and hands.

In his career, Mattias Janmark has a mark of 80-115-195 in 557 NHL regular season games.
