South Shore secures first place; Snugs take first win

South Shore, with Andrew Ullo’s arm and bat, defeated host Mid-Island 13-1 to secure first place in the tournament with a 4-0 record, while visiting Snug Harbor won its first match with a 6- 4 win over Staten Island Thursday night in Little League District 24 All-Star 11s baseball action.

Snug Harbor (1-3), the No. 4 seed, and Staten Island (0-4), the No. 5 seed, meet again Monday in the play-in round at Snug Harbor. The winner of that game will face South Shore in the semifinals on Thursday in Tottenville.

No. 2 Great Kills (3-1) hosts No. 3 Mid-Island (2-2) in the other semifinal on Thursday.

Ullo did it all for the Tottenville run, pitching three strong innings and going 3-for-3 with a single, homer and double for six RBIs in the five-inning, mercy-rule-shortened game.

“Ullo is the complete package,” SSLL manager Sal Iacono said. “Power pitcher, power hitter, solid defender. He’s worked really hard all summer. It doesn’t surprise me to see him do what he does.”

Ullo had plenty of help when John Iacono went 2 for 2 with two doubles and three RBI.

Craig Tronolone pitched the fourth inning and Adam Syed closed the game with three strikeouts in the fifth.

Iacono’s troops now have to wait to see who they play in the semi-finals.

“The one seed is HUGE for us,” Iacono said. “There are a lot of advantages to being a one seed, the biggest advantage for us is we get home-field advantage. Our guys benefit tremendously from playing in our stadium in front of our home crowd.”

Brian Yandoli threw 5 1/3 innings, striking out six and giving up five, while Noah Figueroa earned the save in a matchup of two 0-3 teams entering the game.

Snug Harbor was led by Frank Cecero’s two hits and two RBIs, along with Dylan McGinn’s two hits. Anthony Carollo and Figueroa added key RBIs.

“Always good to win,” Snug Harbor manager Jim Stefanski said. “Just one game at a time (now in the playoffs). I’m just looking for improvement, which is what I saw today in this game compared to the previous three.”

Staten Island LL reliever Evin Doda allowed just one run in three innings of work to keep his team in the game.
