Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a rib injury during his team’s home game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and was ruled out by the team, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reported that it is not a “long-term injury,” but the team was cautious after taking a big lead early on the Panthers. The team will evaluate the issue on Monday.

Evan Washburn of CBS Sports reported during the broadcast that the quarterback underwent X-rays of the injury during the game:

Daniels’ mother, Regina Jackson, provided an encouraging update shortly after he left the game.

Daniels returned to the sideline without uniform in the second half, to loud applause from the home crowd:

Daniels suffered the injury on a seven-yard run in the first quarter. He stayed in the game for the rest of the game, which was capped off by an Austin Seibert field goal, giving Washington a 10–0 lead.

However, Daniels did not return to the match. He attempted some throws on the field but returned to the sideline to be checked by medical personnel. Daniels then went to the blue medical tent before walking off the field.

The rookie has been phenomenal through his first six NFL games, completing 75.3 percent of his passes for 1,404 yards, six touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has also rushed for 322 yards and four more scores.

Daniels has already developed into one of the NFL’s most electric talents, and he’s also been the catalyst in turning around a franchise that has largely been a losing franchise since last winning the Super Bowl 33 years ago.

The Commanders’ backup is Marcus Mariota, who is in his 10th season. Mariota began his career as a franchise quarterback for the Tennessee Titans in 2015, when he was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft. He stayed with the team for five years before bouncing around the league, from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Atlanta Falcons, the Philadelphia Eagles and now the Commanders.

Mariota is certainly one of the NFL’s better backups, and he’s more than capable of holding down the fort in Daniels’ absence.

But Daniels’ towering talent could one day return Washington to the long-awaited Super Bowl, and the hope is he returns sooner rather than later.
