Are Chargers behind Steelers in Mike Williams trade talks?

When several new trade rumors went live ahead of NFL Week 7, the Los Angeles Chargers were clearly linked to New York Jets wide receiver Mike Williams once again.

But hidden in those reports was something interesting: a possible clue to where they stand compared to the competition for Williams.

That detail comes from ESPN’s Adam Schefter: “The Jets and Steelers have decided to postpone any substantive discussions about Williams until next week, according to league sources.”

The Jets visit the Pittsburgh Steelers during the Week 7 edition of “Sunday Night Football” on NBC. However, it remains to be seen whether Williams will actually see action after appearing on the injury report.

Still, this could indicate that the Steelers are ahead of the Chargers when it comes to the Williams trade sweepstakes. That, or the Jets really want to play the market for the biggest return possible — although the Jets aren’t really getting the benefit of the doubt, given the Davante Adams trade, the Haason Reddick drama, and many other things.

There’s also the little fact that Williams is bragging about knowledge of Sunday night’s game plan, etc., which keeps things afloat. But if that were strictly the case, he could have been dealt to the Chargers already.

What do we know? The Chargers could really use the help on offense, with breakout rookie Ladd McConkey one of several weapons now on the injury report. And it’s not often that a team can trade for a former first-round pick who already knows the team, its culture and its quarterback.
