New Orleans Saints’ Alvin Kamara responds to ‘incorrect’ Week 7 trade rumors

The New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos kicked off Week 7 of the NFL season with “Thursday Night Football.” The one-sided affair saw the Broncos build a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter before a late Saints touchdown brought the game to a final score of 33-10.

This was Broncos head coach Sean Payton’s first game in New Orleans since retiring from the Saints’ head coaching position after 15 seasons at the helm. After Denver’s win, Payton spent time on the field talking to many of the Saints players he coached, including defensive lineman Cameron Jordan and running back Alvin Kamara.

Kamara spent extra time talking to Payton, sparking rumors that he was asking for a trade. He has since responded to those rumors on Saturday.

He also wrote that he will report any trade news himself or through his friend and longtime Saints teammate Michael Thomas.

Report: Contract talks ‘reopened’ between the Saints and Alvin Kamara

Alvin Kamara contract

Kamara is in the penultimate year of his current contract with the Saints. The 29-year-old running back signed a five-year, $75 million extension with the Saints ahead of the 2020 NFL season. Here’s what’s left of that deal against the salary cap:

  • 2024: Cap hit of $18.5 million, guaranteed salary of $1 million

  • 2025: $29 million cap, no guaranteed salary

  • 2026 (void year): $6 million cap hit

If the Saints cut Kamara before June 1, 2025, New Orleans would be left with $10.1 million in dead money on the salary cap but save the remaining $18.9 million. There are also two empty years attached to the deal to spread out his signing bonus.

Alvin Kamara stats

In 2024, Kamara leads the team in rushing with 111 carries for 438 yards and six touchdowns. He also leads the team in receptions with 34, 252 yards and one receiving touchdown.
