Charlotte man hit by train dies in hospital days after crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte man who was hospitalized after being struck by a CSX train has died.

On Wednesday, October 9 at approximately 1:22 p.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a CSX train near Rozzelles Ferr Road. Upon arrival, police found an unconscious man who appeared to have been hit by a train.

Officers also found a CSX train nearby. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to the scene. MEDIC transported the pedestrian, identified as 79-year-old Curtis Hayes, to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries. Curtis succumbed to his injuries three days later.

Preliminary investigation shows Hayes was walking west on Honeywood Avenue toward Rozzelles Ferry Road when he was struck by a train.
