Aaron Rodgers: ‘I hate’ accusations about role in Jets firing of Robert Saleh

Aaron Rodgers dismissed accusations that he contributed to or even advocated the firing of head coach Robert Saleh by the New York Jets.

Speaking Wednesday afternoon on The Pat McAfee Show, the Jets’ four-time MVP quarterback called the allegations “ridiculous.”

“I hate all these accusations because they are patently false,” Rodgers said. “It’s interesting how much power people think I have. Which I don’t. I love Robert and it was one of those days yesterday.”

The Jets fired Saleh Tuesday morning after falling to 2-3 following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in England. Team owner Woody Johnson called Rodgers the night before, but Rodgers said “nothing was out of the ordinary” on that call. He also reiterated his appreciation for Saleh, calling the coach a “major reason why I came to the Jets.”

The Jets promoted defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to interim head coach. Ulbrich and Johnson suggested changes to the play-caller could happen Tuesday.

Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and Rodgers’ working relationship dates back to their tenure with the Green Bay Packers.

“Our relationship is great,” Rodgers said. “It has always been that way and always will be that way. Some things would change no matter what happened to Robert. We just haven’t played consistent football in attack, as we know. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

“(Ulbrich) and I have spoken a few times. I agree with whatever he decides as far as the offense goes. I want to do what’s best for the team. We support whatever he decides.”
