Kaleb Brown will not play for Iowa football again for the 2024 season

Wide receiver Kaleb Brown’s 2024 college football season has come to an end. And there will certainly be speculation that the timing of the transfer from Ohio State to Iowa could also be in question.

Brown said on Instagram on Monday that he will redshirt this season. Brown had played in three games for the Hawkeyes and played just 19 snaps, catching one pass for 18 yards versus Troy. Under NCAA rules, a player can participate in four or fewer regular season games and maintain eligibility that year. A third-year junior, Brown played in five games at Ohio State as a freshman before catching 22 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown for the Hawkeyes in 2023.

He posted at 8:57 a.m. on Monday: “I have decided to use my redshirt year and will not play any additional games this season. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

Brown’s arrival from Ohio State in May 2023 was a celebrated addition for a program that lacked star power at receiver. He immediately became the highest-rated wide receiver recruit of the Kirk Ferentz era, as a top 100 prospect in the Class of 2022.

But this turned out to be a tumultuous offseason for Brown, who was arrested in June for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) and possession of a fake ID. Brown was suspended for one game for that indiscretion. He played 11 snaps against Iowa State, seven against Troy and one against Minnesota, a failed third-down pass in which he incorrectly took a downfield route. That will mark his final snap of the 2024 season.

Brown did not make the trip to Ohio State last weekend after suffering what Ferentz called a soft tissue injury during Wednesday’s practice.

Ferentz will address the media in Iowa on Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. and will certainly be asked about Brown’s future status. Iowa (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten Conference) hosts Washington (4-2, 2-1) on Saturday (11 a.m. CT, FOX).
