Lando Norris further reduced the lead over Formula 1 standings leader and reigning champion Max Verstappen with victory in the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday.

There are now 52 points between Norris and Verstappen. The Dutch star’s second place helped to limit the damage in terms of losing ground to his biggest challenger.

Oscar Piastri took the other podium spot in third place.

At least, when it came to the top of the standings, there was little drama to be had at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Norris started from pole and held his ground for the first few laps. It didn’t take long for him to show that he had the fastest car on track.

When the dust settled at the finish line, Norris was more than 20 seconds ahead of Verstappen. It was a role reversal from 2023, when Verstappen was the one who galloped to victory.

It was a different story for Norris’ compatriot Lewis Hamilton.

The seven-time F1 champion was bumped off the podium for the third race in a row, finishing sixth, two places behind Mercedes teammate George Russell, a point some fans could not ignore as Hamilton himself criticised the team’s strategy midway through.

Normally I keep my race reporting extremely factual, but today I have to question Mercedes’ strategy @LewisHamilton.
The run down to turn one is so short that overtaking at the start was always unlikely, but now his teammate has outpaced him and has a huge tyre advantage.#SingaporeGP 🇸🇬

With six races left in Hamilton’s farewell campaign with Mercedes and Norris’s bid to overtake Verstappen, it’s looking increasingly likely that they’ll ultimately be disappointed.

For Norris, the challenge is not just to finish ahead of Verstappen, but to create enough distance to where he can meaningfully reduce their difference in the drivers’ standings. While Verstappen is unable to reach the heights he reached last year, he has remained relatively consistent from race to race, hampering Norris’ comeback bid.

Verstappen and the Red Bull team have almost a month off before the United States Grand Prix on October 20 to figure out how to get back on top of the podium.
