West Ham v Chelsea: Premier League – live | Premier League

Important events

Summerville’s participation in West Ham is interesting. Anyway, I just heard this from a mate (currently in a pub in Newport on the way to Leeds-Cardiff; the wall decor consists of Michael Jackson, an American flag and Laurel & Hardy): “Hmmm. I think his level is Championship. I really like him but he has one way of playing. Cuts forward from the left and shoots. Never goes the other way – outside. Teams discovered him towards the end of last season.”

In this strange world we live in, I received an AI prediction of the match from Sportscasting. This is what happens, apparently. When all this happens, you have permission to be freaked out. But again, it seems reasonable.

  • Nicolas Jackson opens the scoring

  • Edson Alvarez scores for West Ham with a stunning long-range strike

  • Chelsea Nick wins via Christopher Nkunku

TNT has Joe Cole on the pitch which seems like a good idea, given his silky smooth skills at both clubs. Cole, a smooth talker, says Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has the “toughest job in the Premier League” and worries that Chelsea is being run purely like a business.

Chelsea are the second-best performer in the Premier League this season with eight goals. That’s just one goal behind Erling Haaland. Not bad, eh. Thanks to a solid GD in the 6-2 win at Wolves, they’ll jump up to second place if they win by two goals or more today. A win for the Hammers would see them join Chelsea on seven points and lift the hosts from 14th to ninth.

West Ham’s women’s team will also be in action which is a bit of a nonsense if you actually support the men and want to see them both. Who came up with that schedule? TV, I know. You can watch that WSL clash – Man Utd v West Ham – here . Emillia Hawkins will guide you through it. It starts at 12:00.

Jadon Sancho is set to play in Chelsea’s starting line-up for the first time. He performed well as a substitute for Bournemouth, so Enzo Maresca believes it is worth starting the winger from the start.

Enzo Fernandez returns to midfield, while Tosin gets his first top-flight start in Chelsea’s defence, with Renato Veiga, Pedro Neto and Axel Disasi all dropping to the bench.

West Ham also see a debut for a wideman, with new signing Crysenscio Summerville the preferred choice. Lucas Paqueta returns as expected, with Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio the two who make way for the XI that started in last week’s 1-1 draw at Fulham.

Preamble

So far this season it’s been much more fun to be an away fan of West Ham and Chelsea. The Hammers faithful have seen their team pick up four points from quick trips to Crystal Palace and Fulham, while Chelsea have made the journey home after beating Wolves 6-2 and Bournemouth 1-0. At home, however, it’s a different story. West Ham have suffered two straight defeats (admittedly, to Aston Villa and Manchester City), while Chelsea have just one point at Stamford Bridge thanks to a disappointing 1-1 draw with Palace.

Those disparities between Covid and empty stadiums and the season certainly can’t last, or at least Julen Lopetegui hopes so. David Moyes was accused of making the Hammers’ attack less than the sum of its parts and Lopetegui was supposed to turn the equation around when he was appointed in the summer. That hasn’t happened yet and the new manager’s goodwill has quickly evaporated.

The good news for the Spaniard is that West Ham have a strong recent history in this competition, having won three of their last five on home soil and scored three goals in each of those victories. Can it continue? Will the Hammers finally click? Will Chelsea have one of their good days? On the evidence of this season so far, no one knows. Better to find out then. It should be fun!
