Embiid signs contract extension with Philadelphia 76ers

Center Joel Embiid has signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers.

According to US sources, the 30-year-old Cameroon-born player has signed a new contract for a maximum duration of three years and is worth $193 million (£145 million).

The 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player has been with the Sixers since the 2014 NBA Draft and now wants to help them win their first title since 1983.

“I started out as a Sixer and I want to stay here for the rest of my career,” Embiid said. “When I got drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon, I had no idea how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia.

“Through all the ups and downs, this city and the fans have been everything to me and I am so grateful for the way they have embraced me.

“Philadelphia is our home and it’s time to deliver an NBA championship to this community.”

Embiid moved to the US at age 16 and attended the University of Kansas.

Last season he averaged 34.7 points, 11 rebounds and 5.6 assists.

“Joel has established himself as one of the best Sixers of all time and is quickly becoming one of the greatest players ever,” said Daryl Morey, 76ers president of basketball operations.

Embiid was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy earlier this year.
