Kevin De Bruyne doubtful for Arsenal with groin injury in draw with Inter | Champions League

Kevin De Bruyne is an injury doubt for Manchester City’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday after suffering a groin injury during the 0-0 Champions League draw with Inter at the Etihad Stadium.

The Belgian was injured when he ran towards goal in the first half and was challenged by Inter’s No. 1 Yann Sommer, after which he appeared to grab his groin. After treatment, De Bruyne continued until half-time, but was then substituted.

Guardiola was asked if the 33-year-old would be available for Arsenal’s visit. “I don’t know, I’ll have more information tomorrow (Thursday). The doctor told me he wasn’t ready to play (in the second half).”

Although it is only the fifth game in the championship defence, Arsenal’s reception is crucial. Mikel Arteta’s team are in second place with 10 points, two behind Guardiola’s team. In the past two seasons, the team even finished in second place.

Rodri made his first start of the season against Inter, while second-half substitute Phil Foden has yet to play a full 90 minutes. Kyle Walker did not feature against the Italian champions, and while Ilkay Gundogan was a substitute, his only start with Walker came in the 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday.

With Nathan Aké out injured, Guardiola was asked whether the Arsenal game so early in the season could mean his team is not quite ready yet.

“Maybe,” he said. “But it is what it is. I have no control over the schedule.”

Guardiola, however, was pleased with City’s performance against Inter, despite dropping points. “We played so well,” he said. “I love my team – we are a fantastic team. Inter are masters of defence and in transition they are also really strong.

“I am very happy with the performance we have delivered. It is the beginning of the season, so these players will be better.”

Guardiola has yet to decide whether to sign a new contract, his current deal expires in June. He was asked if coaching an Italian team would interest him. “Italy is fantastic, but I love it here because English football is so good,” the City boss said. “You can coach without too much pressure and because the club is great.”
