St Johnstone sack manager Craig Levein

St Johnstone have sacked manager Craig Levein just five games into the new Scottish Premiership campaign.

The 59-year-old former Scotland manager took up the post in November last year, averting the threat of relegation.

The Perth-based team are tenth in the standings, with one win and four losses.

Saints started the season with three wins from four games in the Premier Sports Cup, but lost to League One Alloa Athletic.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Hibernian was the team’s fourth straight defeat in all competitions.

Levein, co-host of the BBC podcast Sacked in the Morning, was Hearts manager twice and has also managed Leicester City and Dundee United.

From December 2009 to November 2012 he was Scotland manager, winning 10 of his 24 matches.

American Adam Webb took over as manager of St Johnstone this summer after Geoff Brown owned McDiarmid Park for almost four decades.

A short statement from the club said: “The Board of Directors can announce that St Johnstone Football Club has today parted ways with manager Craig Levein.

“The football club would like to thank Craig for all his efforts during his time at McDiarmid Park.”
