Kevin Harlan Hilariously Saves NFL In-Game Update, Calls It Self After Technical Issues CBS

Kevin Harlan saved the day in a way that only he could on Sunday afternoon.

The longtime NFL announcer who called the Minnesota Vikings’ victory over the San Francisco 49ers on CBS tried to throw it back to their studio in the second half for an in-game update. He’s done it before on the broadcast, and there was nothing unusual about it.

The problem, however, was that Nate Burleson couldn’t hear anything from the CBS studio in New York.

As the climax of the New York Jets-Tennessee Titans game was getting underway, Harlan expertly jumped in.

“I can do that! I can hear you!” Harlan hilariously shouted after Burleson said he had lost sound.

All of a sudden, Harlan called two games at once.

Harlan was a bit slow on the details, but it’s hard to blame him when he was a thousand miles away playing a completely different game. Naturally, broadcast partner Trent Green was stunned when Harlan rolled right back into the Vikings-49ers game without missing a beat.

“You announced two games at the same time,” Green said. “And now you announced a studio and a game at the same time. You never cease to amaze me. It’s unbelievable.”

Fortunately, CBS resolved the issue and Burleson was able to air the next studio update without any problems.

“I appreciate you more, man,” Burleson said. “You know, if one guy drops the ball, another guy picks it up. … Back to my buddy Kev, he can do anything.”

Harlan has been covering sports for decades, so it’s no wonder he didn’t hesitate Sunday afternoon. He first joined CBS Sports in 1998 as an NFL play-by-play announcer. He also covers NBA games on TNT, college basketball games for CBS and does “Monday Night Football” and the Super Bowl on the air for Westwood One.
