F1 News: Valtteri Bottas ‘positive’ about his future ahead of Azerbaijan GP

With the Formula 1 season drawing to a close, only two grid spots for the 2025 campaign remain to be confirmed. One of those spots is at Visa Cash App RB F1 Team, where current driver Daniel Ricciardo and reserve driver Liam Lawson are among the top options.

The other spot? That’s at Sauber, a seat currently occupied by Valtteri Bottas. While the team has confirmed that Nico Hulkenberg will drive for the new team ahead of Sauber’s switch to the Audi factory operation in 2026, the team has yet to confirm who will be their second driver.

Speaking to the official F1 channel ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Bottas indicated how talks with the team are progressing and that F1 remains his “most likely” destination for next year.

“Yeah, there are quite a few things to think about in this sport. The race weekend alone is quite a mental and physical strain on you, and then there’s the contract situation which adds to the stress,” Bottas began. “But yeah, things are moving forward.

“We still have almost daily contact with Mattia (Binotto), to find out what each party wants and, yes, that’s about it. But I’m always positive.”

When pressed on the matter, Bottas indicated that Formula 1 was his “most likely” destination for next season, but did not rule out a “hypothetical” move to another series. He specifically mentioned IndyCar as Plan B.

“I don’t think there’s any need to think about that too much,” Bottas began. “Now I think it’s very clear to me where I want to be, and where I probably will be, which is in Formula 1.

“But let’s say if it’s a hypothetical question, if it’s not Formula 1, I would definitely race. I’m a racer and I’ve been racing all my life, and I couldn’t just stop racing,” Bottas continued. “And plan B would be IndyCar, and try to win the championship in X number of years.”

Earlier this week SB nation published an exclusive with the Sauber driver, in which he discussed his future contract. His comments in Azerbaijan echo those made earlier this week.

“I’m still working on it,” Bottas told SB nation. “Some progress is being made, but that is all I can say for now. I have had good conversations that will continue in the coming days. That is all I can give you. In the end, everything will work out somehow.”

His fans are hoping for news as soon as possible.
