Mike Tomlin: Steelers prepare for Justin Fields to start in place of Russell Wilson vs. Broncos on Sunday

Broncos fans eager to welcome Russell Wilson back to Denver may be disappointed.

Justin Fields is expected to start in Sunday’s Broncos-Steelers game.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Tuesday that the Steelers are preparing for Fields to start Sunday.

“As I sit here today, we’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback,” Tomlin told reporters. “I think that’s the right way to do it. Speculating is a waste of time. Russell is injured.”

Wilson joined the Steelers in an offseason trade after two disappointing seasons with the Broncos. The Steelers also acquired Fields from the Chicago Bears, and Wilson was named the team’s starter after one game at the end of training camp.

But Wilson developed a stiff calf Thursday before Sunday’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. The stiffness was in the same calf Wilson had strained early in training camp. Fields got the start Sunday as the Steelers beat the Falcons despite not scoring a touchdown.

The Steelers shot six field goals in an 18-10 victory. Fields completed 17 of 23 passes for 156 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers. He added 57 rushing yards on 14 carries. Now he’s in line for a second start against the Broncos.

Tomlin declined to rule Wilson out of Sunday’s game. He said Tuesday that Wilson is feeling better than he did over the weekend. But he doesn’t expect Wilson to fully participate in practice Wednesday.

“During the week we’ll analyze if he’s able to protect himself, be productive,” Tomlin said. “When we reach those points, we’ll think about whether or not he’s included.”

The Steelers will be looking to improve to 2-0 after last week’s win over the Falcons. The Broncos are looking for their first win after Wilson’s rookie replacement Bo Nix struggled in his NFL debut in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

If the Steelers win their second straight game with Fields at quarterback, they could face a decision soon.
