In a few days, fighting game fans will be able to immerse themselves in Marvel vs. Marvel Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. The compilation of seven titles, including the second part in the title series and the beloved Tighter beat them upwill be released on September 12th. But if you can’t wait that long to get your MvC fix, then Steam has a deal for you. Until September 13th you can Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3—which is not part of the upcoming collection—for €7.49 and enjoy the incredibly modern take on the classic tag team fighter from 2011.

For many loyal fans Marvel vs Capcom 2 will always be the pinnacle of the series, but it’s also firmly rooted in the franchise’s arcade roots. What makes MvC3 an incredible game in its own right (and a fantastic companion for anyone looking to pick up the new collection when it comes out) is how it translates the franchise formula into a more modern fighter. But every good fighting game starts with its roster, and MvC3 has an impressive roster of 50 characters to choose from. As is typical in the series, you can mix and match the roster up to a team of three, creating a wide variety of play styles that you can essentially tailor to your needs as a player. That roster also includes the introduction of iconic Capcom and Marvel characters such as Ace Lawyer‘s Phoenix Wright, Resident Evil‘s Nemesis and Hawkeye, all three of whom are perfect additions.

Of course, gameplay is king when it comes to fighting games, so it’s a good thing that MvC3 still delivers in this regard. It continues the fast and frenetic tag team combat of its predecessors with a more refined design. Perhaps the most significant change is the introduction of the X-Factor mechanic, which allows players to move faster, deal more damage, regenerate more health, and extend combos. It’s an ability that can only be activated by a player once per match and grows stronger the more knockout characters you have on your team. It’s essentially a hail mary that gives everyone a chance to come back and win it all, making every match feel like a real competition that could turn at any moment.

MvC3 also introduced a simplified control scheme that (before Street Fighter 6‘s incredibly modern controls) felt like the poster child for how to make a fighting game more beginner-friendly while still keeping the focus on strategy. To this day, the three-button scheme MvC3 one of the easiest fighting games to pick up. As an added bonus, the transition from pixelated sprites to 3D character models with cel-shading makes the world of MvC3 more comic book-like than the series has ever had before. It gives the game a unique look that matches the large multiversal clashes you’ll be taking part in, and that has not been matched by any game in the series. So even if you can’t wait to dive in, MvC2 again on September 12th, don’t ignore the modern classic that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
