Barcelona have had contacts over a big name transfer, with major developments expected in the coming weeks

According to Matteo Moretto in the latest edition of his column in the Daily Briefing, Barcelona have made initial contacts regarding the possible transfer of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

The Germany international is in the final year of his contract at Leverkusen and his situation has caused much speculation this summer, with both Bayern Munich and Chelsea being linked with him at various times.

The latest news on Tah seems to be that Barca will investigate whether they can get him in a deal via Financial Fair Play in the coming weeks. This has proven to be a tricky issue for the Catalan giants of late, as it affects their chances in the transfer market.

Barca haven’t had the busiest summer this year, with only Dani Olmo as their main new signing, but it appears they are now seriously looking at a potential deal for Tah, who would undoubtedly be a fantastic signing if they can pull it off.

Transfer: What’s next for Leverkusen’s star defender?

Leverkusen have a number of star players who will now undoubtedly find favour with the more established top clubs in Europe. The Bundesliga champions are performing above expectations thanks to the excellent work of their promising young manager Xabi Alonso.

Jonathan Tah in action for Germany

The price Leverkusen will inevitably pay for their surprise success is that big names like Tah are coming into the sights of Bayern and Barça, and it now looks very difficult for the German champions to keep hold of him.

Tah has been a key figure in this remarkable Leverkusen story, but at the same time he will undoubtedly be keen to represent one of the most historic names in European football before his career is over.

The 28-year-old is undoubtedly at the peak of his powers now, so if he doesn’t make the big move now, he may never get another chance.

The future is not yet decided, says Moretto

Discussing Tah’s future, Moretto said: “This week, Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah gave an interview to Suddeutsche Zeitung, in which he confirmed that he would not be extending his contract with Die Werkself, after months of ties with Bayern Munich. Fabrizio Romano has also reported that an agreement on personal terms with the Bavarian side was reached months ago.

“That said, I don’t think Tah’s future is decided yet. As he himself admitted, he will be free to decide where he goes.

“Barcelona are in the race, as are other clubs. Barcelona have already made contacts for Tah at the end of this transfer window and will try to see in the coming weeks if it is possible to sign him for free within their salary cap restrictions.”
