The Detroit Lions opened the season with a win. And more importantly, they may have an emerging star in wideout Jameson Williams.

The speed demon finished with five receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown in Detroit’s 26-20 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night.

Prior to the season, it was unclear how big a role Williams would play in the offense, especially since players like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery were slated to feature.

But it’s now clear that Williams is going to eat, and the Jared Goff-Williams connection has been getting rave reviews on social media:

Breakout game.

If #Lions Jameson Williams is catching them this season… this could be something.

And then there was David Montgomery.

The bruising back had another strong game, rushing 17 times for 91 yards and a touchdown. He was a monster in overtime, carrying the ball five times for 45 yards and the game-winning score.

He overpowered the tired Rams defense, ended overtime on the first drive and made an impression on social media in the process:

Of course, that was nothing new. Montgomery thrived in Detroit. But Williams was a revelation.

The 23-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Lions but was still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in college and didn’t make his debut until Week 13 of that season.

He was subsequently suspended for the first four games of the 2023 season for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. He showed flashes of his potential, catching 24 passes for 354 yards and two scores in 12 games last season, but he was not a key part of the offense.

That seems to have changed this season, however, and it makes sense on a couple of fronts. First, Williams has dynamic speed, which allows him to stretch defenses vertically and make plays after the catch.

But the Lions also released Josh Reynolds in free agency, leaving a hole at the No. 2 receiver jam. And it appears Williams has stepped into that role.

St. Brown and Sam LaPorta will likely still be Detroit’s top pass-catchers, but Williams is going to be a playmaker this season. An already dangerous Lions offense looks even more menacing.
